.....UAE government proceeded last week to close Dubai office of the National Democratic American Institute, a non-governmental organization affiliated to the U.S. State Department working to spread democracy through its regional offices in different countries, immediately a similar decision was followed to close Abu Dhabi Office of the German organization “Konrad Adenauer”, which is close to Conservative Party, connected to German Chancellor “Angela Merkel,” and that organization also works in supporting democracy. The closure was disappointingly met by shocked and distraught workers at the institutions and all those interested in civil society of the UAE actions.

Lays Campbell, Middle East and North Africa Regional Director of the National Democratic American Institute, Stated that official bodies with identities not announced raided the headquarter of the Institute in Dubai and claimed the license is expired, and ordered to apply the closure immediately, despite the fact that the Institute does not implement any programs in the UAE, it is a regional center serves the programs in Kuwait, Qatar and other countries in the region.

Konrad Adenauer, which operates in the UAE since 2009 – has expressed surprise and fear of the fate of NGOs in the Arab world after the restrictions experienced by those organizations in Egypt and the UAE..........
