Jason Kenney, you should be proud of yourself

See what Canadians are saying about the revised Immigrants' guide.

For all of our flaws, and for all the advances Canada's own dark bureaucracies have made in their cancerous invasions of our private lives, and into our traditions of due process, we have sunk to nothing like the European level of depravity. We still have independent institutions of long standing; and even if they won't stand boldly against the "trends of the times" -- against the metastatic growth of the Nanny State -- they could still do so.

When CTV ran the news about the new guide, the website was jammed with comments, and it's easy to see that the overwhelming majority felt that the new guide was fantastic:
Sounds reasonable to me to have knowledge of Canada in order to live in this great country. The only requirement under the Liberal governments were for the immigrants to learn how to get welfare and use the system. ...Allan
This makes me very happy to hear. This is a great stepping stone to re-unifying Canada after so many years of self hating government policies from the liberals. We're proud of our country, we're proud of our history, you marxists out there will never take it away from us! .....MD
I am THRILLED with the new Citizenship Guide... and as for the snarky CTV headline about the guide being small on "arts"... let me just say that ballet dancers, painters and others in the "arts" are not the reason for my freedom, nor do I see any of these "artists" fighting for freedom in Afghanistan or Iraq.....Irritable Canadian

Also, there were a few suggestions from Canadians, which would serve well to keep in mind for the next revision, whenever that happens to be:

A fantastic idea!!! I would also add that there should be more emphasis put on the history of the RCMP as well. And to finish it off, you should only allow ONE passport! This would deter any convienient Canadians that get a Canadian Passport and then move away for years on end only to demand help when their original country is attacked. ...Ryder
The lady that spoke on Powerplay today, Sima Sahar Zerehi also siad that canda should give "FREE" language classes to people when they come to this country. But as a Canadian who has live here all of my life 58 years if I want to learn to speak french I have to pay. I think what we have to do in this country is teach people Canada isn't just about a "FREE" hand out. ......... Peter
The guide should also stress that if anyone wants to be called Canadian he/she must be willing to embrace our values and culture. We should not have to adapt to outside retarded ways nor should we have to put up with religious fanatics....Tony

Other news outlets reported on the reaction from individuals:

Jack Jedwab, executive director of the Montreal-based think-tank Association for Canadian Studies, says the new citizenship document represents a clear victory for the "well intentioned" proponents of Canada's military history, who have long argued that the country's pivotal participation in the two world wars should occupy a more central place in our national identity

Speaking for myself,  I  liked the inclusion of the following paragraph, and  any one who dares to criticize this inclusion has a  dark hidden agenda. Only a muslim man of the worst sort or a non-muslim of  an unspeakable sort, who desires to treat his women folk like dirt, will find something amiss with these words.  A good decent man will applaud the inclusion as will all women.
The Equality of Women and Men
In Canada, men and women are equal under the law. Canada's openness and generosity do not extend to barbaric cultural  practices that tolerate spousal abuse, honour killings, female genital mutilation, or other gender-based violence. Those guilty of these crimes are severely punished under Canada's criminal laws

  2. That's the kind of national identity I want to have!
For too long, this country has been begging people to come here and then not requiring enough responsibility in return. If you are going to come here, welcome to Canada. But please, be part of the solution, not the problem!

  3. I loved reading the new guide, and am quite proud of the idea of those seeking a new life as a citizen of this great country will read this guide in preparation to becoming a citizen.

It had me running to my history books and re reading in detail some of the events mentioned. Finally someone has done right and produced a guide that succinctly describes why I am so proud of my country and its history and its future.

  4. I remember the time I sat for the test. That was about 10 years ago. New immigrants have to be in Canada as permanent residents for 3 full years before putting in their applications for citizenship. When my family was called for the test, there were more than 50 of us new immigrants in the examination hall. All my family members were made to sit far apart from each other so there would be no temptation to cheat on the answers. One of my family members had an Asian guy sitting next to her and the poor man kept whispering to her asking for help. The monitor saw what was happening and took him away. Later when we were walking out of the examination hall we saw him having an interview with an immigration officer. No idea what transpired. Poor man ... he was not fully prepared for the test.
I believe if one cannot write in either English or French, than a judge makes the decision to ask some simple oral questions.
