This sort of action should have been happening from day ONE. If there were enough troops at the very start of the war with enough will-power to kill and vaporize the enemy with the best weaponry available, each and every NATO member would have been out of that hellhole long, long, long ago. It is only because of the blasted Geneva Conventions and the wimpy wussy leftie idiots that we have seen hundreds of our soldiers die in a foreign land.
The Geneva Conventions were meant for wars fought between countries where all sides had a semblance of decency and an understanding of human values and dignity. When dealing with the Taliban and Al Qaeda, the Geneva Conventions have less value than used toilet paper and any terrorist will be happy to tell you that they give two hoots about that stupid agreement signed in 1949 or whenever. So, if one party of the presently ongoing war between the terrorists and us, is not abiding by that agreement, how does it still hold water?????
NEAR MARJAH, Afghanistan – U.S. and Afghan soldiers linked up with Marines on the outskirts of the Taliban stronghold of Marjah on Thursday, sealing off escape routes and setting the stage for what is being described as the biggest offensive of the nine-year war.
Taliban defenders repeatedly fired rockets and mortars at units poised in foxholes along the edge of the town, apparently trying to lure NATO forces into skirmishes before the big attack.
"They're trying to draw us in," said Capt. Joshua Winfrey, 30, of Tulsa, Okla., commander of Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines.
Up to 1,000 militants are believed holed up in Marjah, a key Taliban logistics base and center of the lucrative opium poppy trade. But the biggest threats are likely to be the land mines and bombs hidden in the roads and fields of the farming community, 380 miles (610 kilometers) southwest of Kabul. read further

Fighting massed battles with huge volumes of firepower is only appropriate in a limited set of circumstances (like fighting a conventional war against a peer nation).
ReplyDeleteLimited offenses like this one or "OP MEDUSA" in 2006 make sense when the insurgent enemy decides to mass their forces, but counterinsurgency warfare mostly involves patience and converting the local population away from the insurgents and towards supporting you.
This takes a long time to build trust, and vapourizing their farms and villages while fighting the insurgents destroys any goodwill you may have accumulated.
Think of this more like surgery; the patient generally can recover faster if non invasive or minimally invasive procedures are used. (No analogy is exact, but this is a good starting point).
