Riddle me one, riddle me two... Answer will further puzzle you

Two men do something nasty on Christmas Day 2009. One does it  in New York on terra firma and  the other does it in mid-air on a plane. One man brandished a knife in a robbery at a Chinese restaurant. The other man had an exploding device in his underwear and was caught while trying to detonate the device which might have killed nearly 300 passengers.
