Kick me if I am way out with this....

but do you think it would make sense to bring Haiti within our country's fold ?  I thought I had heard, some time ago, about Canada possibly playing bountiful with some Caribbean island and making it a part of Canada just like Puerto Rico is a part of the USA.

Haiti, according to people who have been there, is a beautiful island and besides the few thousands of it's natives who believe in black magic and stuff like that, most Haitians are simple, friendly people. Making Haiti a part of Canada would not only benefit Haitians, it would benefit Canadians as well, as we would be able to either holiday or even retire to our own little sunny island and keep our money on Canadian soil. There are several ways in which Canada would be able to enrich this poorest part in the Western hemisphere. Giving incentives and tax breaks to Canadian companies to set up shop over there would be just one of them. Having Canadian farmers venture into Haiti and develop miles and miles of farm land  usage all year round would mean win-win for Haitians as well as the venturers. No shortage of labor for the farmers and jobs aplenty for the natives.

Think about it.

  1. Haiti is a few decades away from being considered eligible to beocome a province.

Consider what happened when East Germany and West Germany were reunited. The East German economy was in such poor condition, and the country so under-developed, that it drug the entire country into stagnation.

There was a great deal of resentment of East Germans by West Germans -- a lot of tension.

And remember that East Germans and West Germans were of the same race -- another aggravating factor. I would worry that bringing Haiti into Canada -- as a province or as a territory -- may invite such tensions. I'm not in favour of that.

Perhaps in time. But not now, disaster or no disaster.

  2. I agree with you, poverty strcken nations are a liability to all.

  3. Some years ago there was a move to add the Turk & Caicos Islands to Canada.

Interesting idea about Haiti. Wouldn't want it to be a province, though. Maybe a territory provided that it adopted a good free market, Canadian style courts and Canadian-style parliamentary democracy internally. These institutions would help lift it from poverty.

It would have to be responsible for its own social programs and I shudder at the thought of it having "have not" status with even more $ flowing from the rest of us.

Quebec City too cold in February? Fredericton frosty in December? Nunavut November not for you? Fear not, there may be help: at least one member of Parliament and a handful of interest groups are asking the Canadian government to annex a little slice of sun-splashed heaven: the Turks and Caicos, a Caribbean gem with an average wintertime temperature hovering between 28 and 29 C.

  5. Here in Quebec we are all for Haitians but we won't employ them in the provincial or municipal civil service. A lot of them are driving taxis in Montreal.

  6. I believe the country you refer to as joining Canada is Jamaica. There is still an unofficial Canada/Jamaica committee exploring the means to being this about. The biggest drawback is that census and immigration figures are very poorly collected in Jamaica, and the fear is that there would be a flood of people landing in Jamaica, all claiming to be citizens. If the various parties can work out some method for ensuring that a tidal wave of unknown Jamaicans doesn't suddenly appear to take advantage of the situation, I would be more than pleased to see that beautiful island become part of Canada as a territory.

  7. Maybe we should ask the Haitians first?

  8. The first thing we would have to do is bring their standards of living up to the Canadian minimum. That means health care, welfare, infrastructure, etc. At a time when we are running huge deficits do you really think we can afford this?

  9. "Maybe we should ask the Haitians first?"

Absolutely. I thought that went without saying.

  10. No kick, but rather a high-five.

I too think that Canada should work towards bringing more countries "under our fold", especially if we can turn them away from "black magic". Haiti needs a Brit Hume truthsayer. Like Tiger's crash, this is the perfect opportunity for Canada to not only rescue the people of Haiti from their eternal heathen damnation, but to also secure a retirement location for those Canadians that long to retire to a climate less Canadian.

I love it when market forces come together!
