Armenians are keeping count of the slaps they are getting

One of my neighbours here in Toronto is a descendent from the remnants of the Armenian people who fled the genocide of 1915 to neighbouring Syria. In a couple of days, Armenia's president will be swallowing his pride and signing trade agreements with Turkey, the perpetrator of the genocide that killed more than 1.5 million Armenians in the most horrifying manner. It must be a blow to Armenians not only at home but around the world, people like my neighbour who would like to see Turkey acknowledge the genocide and apologize for it.

  1. Sorry, but can you say "get over it people!!!"?

Come on now, there is no one person alive today, who was in any position of responsibility for what happened to the Armenians in 1915. Nor is there one who can be called to task for the tribulations of native North Americans, and (this will get me a few flames) there is no German alive who had any high rank during the holocaust. It's time to bury the hatchet, and I don't mean in anyones spine.

  2. Rick - yes, they can get over it, IF the Turkish government acknowledges that they had done the crime and apologizes. Is that too much to ask for 1.5 million dead?

  3. Ok, I'll grant that acknowledging the fact would be a good idea, but I still say that nobody alive today is responsible for anything that their ancestors did, only for what they themselves have done.

  4. How is the current Turkish regime in anyway responsible for the actions of the Ottoman Empire?

Yes, it happened; yes it was horrible. The perpetrators are no longer around either in person or as an institution. We might as well ask for restitution from the Res Publica Roma for invading Gaul....
