Ontario students at the mercy of striking college personnel
They should get a major part or the entire part of the tuition for that period, returned to them. That would be only fair.
Meagan Fitzpatrick at CBC News
Will a lawsuit help Ontario students get their money back after college strike?
Frustrated students seek tuition refunds as government tries to open classrooms by Monday
Frustrated and financially burdened students affected by the Ontario colleges strike are turning to the courts to try to get some cash back.
A class action was commenced on Tuesday that seeks to recover tuition money on behalf of the thousands of students at 24 colleges who have been out of class since mid-October.
Going down the lawsuit road could be a long and ultimately unsuccessful journey, but there could still be some benefits to it in the short term, say class action experts.
"Bringing that lawsuit has got the plight of the students some more press and that is inherently pressure, political or otherwise, potentially economic, on the colleges at least, maybe the union," said Jason Squire, head of the class action group at Lerners LLP in Toronto.
Pressure on the Ontario government to step in and force an end to the strike, now in its fifth week, ramped up Thursday when the latest contract offer from the College Employer Council was rejected by striking faculty, represented by the Ontario Public Service Employees Union.
Premier Kathleen Wynne met with representatives from both sides on Thursday afternoon, and several hours later her government announced it would introduce legislation to force them into binding arbitration and end the strike. The premier said she wants to see students back in class by Monday morning......

Justin Trudeau, Dion and rest of the Liberal gang are as dishonest and vile as Harper and gang were ...
when Cons were power. Making excuses for supplying $15 B worth of arms to the most disgusting nation on this our good Earth, will not cut it, definitely not with "thinking" Canadians. Where was Trudeau and the rest of his hypocrites when Harper+Cons were approving the deal? Are the Libs trying to get away from this major sin by pushing the entire blame on the Cons? Won't work. Power corrupts and Absolute Power corrupts Absolutely. Justin Trudeau is a hypocrite, a liar and worst of all he is a greedy, lying ham trying to appear like he is doing the "respectable" thing by keeping to an agreement.
Harper+Cons lost because of Israel and now Trudeau+Libs will lose because of Saudi Arabia.
Are our Canadian politicians fast becoming as utterly disgusting as those we often criticize from down South?
Needless to say, I am totally in sync with the following comment from Man-O-Man at the last link.
Man-O-Man
I couldn't agree more with Daniel Turp. This deal is a travesty and a huge mistake for Canada. I don't care about the 3,000 jobs in London. Let them join the 70,000 jobless in Alberta due to Saudi Arabia controlled oil prices. All parties are guilty on this - even the NDP who were told by the union in London to back off criticism of the deal. We need a socially responsible party that isn't controlled by unions in this country.

As Liberals defend Saudi arms deal, U.S. report highlights human rights concerns
Canada is applying a 'double standard' when it comes to human rights, Amnesty International says
The Liberal government continued to defend Canada's $15-billion sale of light-armoured vehicles to Saudi Arabia as "a matter of principle," just as a new report highlighting the U.S government's concerns with widespread human rights violations in the kingdom was released this week.
"Fundamentally, this issue is a matter of principle," said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau from London, Ont., steps away from the company supplying the LAVs to Saudi Arabia. "The principle at play here is that Canada's word needs to mean something in the international community."
Trudeau maintained his government would respect the contract even if it was signed in 2014 under Stephen Harper's Conservatives.
"It is important that people know that when they sign a deal with Canada, that when they sign a commercial agreement, a change in government isn't going to lead to that contract being ripped up," Trudeau said on Thursday.
However, a new report highlighting the U.S government's concerns with human rights violations in Saudi Arabia could give critics of the contract more ammunition to put pressure on Canada to cancel it........
Neil Macdonald at CBC
On Saudi arms deal, the new boss in Ottawa is just like the old boss
Well. If further proof was needed that the sunny new regime in Ottawa is perfectly capable of behaving just like the un-sunny previous regime, we now have it, in a memo that was stamped "Secret," then rather inconveniently laid bare in the Federal Court of Canada.
The document, signed by Foreign Affairs Minister Stéphane Dion, is a gem of hair-splitting, parsing, wilful blindness and justification for selling billions worth of fighting vehicles and weaponry to Saudi Arabia, one of the most oppressive regimes on Earth.
It employs the death-merchant logic of a long list of other countries that have profited for decades by arming despots: The deal means jobs and the customer assures us it won't misuse the weapons and we can't prove otherwise.
Besides, anti-tank weapons and heavy machine-guns don't kill people; people kill people.
With a single checkmark, Dion concurred with everything in the memo.
Among other things, Dion explicitly endorses Saudi Arabia's ruinous military campaign in Yemen, the victims of which, according to the United Nations, are overwhelmingly civilian....

Saudi arms deal with Trudeau government leaves Daniel Turp 'astonished'
'There's something really unacceptable in the way things have been done,' Montreal law professor says
A Montreal law professor leading a court challenge against the federal government's Saudi arms deal says he's "astonished" by Foreign Affairs Minister Stéphane Dion's decision to approve most of the $15-billion combat vehicle order.
Daniel Turp filed for a judicial review of the deal last month in Federal Court, hoping a judge would block the sale due to the country's human rights violations.
"You would expect the government to await the decision of the court," Turp, a former Bloc Québécois MP, told CBC Montreal's Daybreak on Wednesday.
"There's something really unacceptable in the way things have been done."........

A heartbreaking look at Detroit ... street views of the the way it was and now
Let this be a lesson to all other cities chock full of Labor Unions, because without a sliver of a doubt, the Unions along with those that were bribed by them in the Detroit government, are responsible for what happened to Detroit... it wasn't just the banksters.
Lots of before and after street views at link.
Tyler Durden writing at ZeroHedge:
.....The Death And Decay Of Detroit, As Seen From The Streets
With the stock market hitting record highs day after day, it is easy to move on and forget that one of American's once premier cities, Detroit, has been bankrupt for nearly a year. But out of mind doesn't mean out of sight, especially now that Google has launched its street view Time Machine, which provides for 7 years worth of street images, showing the time shift of the tumultuous period period starting in 2007. One blogger who decided to take this time lapse data and apply it to the city of Detroit is GooBing Detroit who, as the following time-lapse photos demonstrate, has captured Detoit's unprecedented slow-motion collapse into death and decay in what is the closest we have to "real time."
Perhaps what is most stunning about the following series of photos is not the ultimate fate of the bankrupt city, but how quickly a once vibrant metropolis has succumbed to blight and sheer desperation.
Hopefully not coming to a street near you.
All photos from the Goobingdetroit tumblr depict various areas and streets in Detroit, then and now...........

This is the reason why the TTC needs competition .....
it has developed that "too big to fail" attitude which is vomit-inducing...especially from its Union.
Katrina Clarke writing at NationalPost:
TTC union boss says driver abandoning passengers in bus for 30 minutes ‘not that big of a deal’
The Toronto Transit Commission says an incident involving a TTC driver who abandoned his bus and left passengers stranded for 30 minutes Tuesday is “unacceptable,” while the head of the transit workers union said it was an “insignificant” incident.
A TTC rider on the abandoned bus posted a video of the incident to YouTube Tuesday. Passenger Victor Bulario said the driver of the bus stopped at Eglinton Avenue West and Trethewey Drive and left the vehicle without making any announcement to his passengers. According to Mr. Bulario the bus was left unattended with the doors open for more than 30 minutes.
“We’re taking this matter very seriously. We can’t have buses left unattended with customers on board,” said TTC spokesman Brad Ross on Wednesday. “It is unacceptable in general terms.”
Mr. Ross said he saw the video on Tuesday and that TTC officials are reviewing the matter......

Autoworkers smack their Labor Union to a punishing defeat
Are workers paying those $$$$s from their pay packets to Labor Unions waking up? I sure hope so. The stranglehold that Labor Union bosses have, on not only their own members but on political parties, must be broken once and for all. Labor Unions were definitely needed in the past of some decades ago, when they actually and truly worked on behalf of the workers. These days, the Unions are nothing but lobbyists working for and on behalf of their preferred political party. Labor Union bosses are now the new Mafia.
Steven Greenhouse writing at NYTimes:
...In a defeat for organized labor in the South, employees at the Volkswagen plant here voted 712 to 626 against joining the United Automobile Workers.
The loss is an especially stinging blow for U.A.W. because Volkswagen did not even oppose the unionization drive. The union’s defeat — in what was one of the most closely watched unionization votes in decades — is expected to slow, perhaps stymie, the union’s long-term plans to organize other auto plants in the South.
A retired local judge, Samuel H. Payne, announced the vote results inside VW’s sprawling plant after officials from the National Labor Relations Board had counted the ballots. In the hours before the votes were tallied, after three days of voting at the assembly plant, both sides were predicting victory.
From WallStreetJournal:
....The United Auto Workers union suffered a crushing defeat Friday, falling short in an election in which it seemed to have a clear path to organizing workers at Volkswagen's plant in Chattanooga, Tenn.
The setback is a bitter defeat because the union had the cooperation of Volkswagen management and the aid of Germany's powerful IG Metall union, yet it failed to win a majority among the plants 1,550 hourly workers......

Labor Unions = Mini Terror Outfits
We know how individuals in the guise of "helping our fellow men" can make themselves into mini-gods and wield bully-power. Cue ... Labor bosses and their hatchet men.
Peter Gumbel writing at Reuters:
....In France, taking a person hostage or sequestering them against their will is a crime punishable by up to 20 years in jail. It also happens to be a very effective weapon in French labor disputes. Since 2009, there have been 15 incidents of “boss-napping” and only one resulted in sanctions: 11 postal workers who were fined $2,000 apiece for locking up their managers during a dispute over a change in how the mail is delivered.
Most of the time, it’s the unions who win. That’s certainly the case in the most recent incident, involving a bitter struggle over job losses at a Goodyear tire plant in Amiens. Earlier this month, union officials occupied the factory and sequestered the production manager and head of human resources for 30 hours. After the government intervened, the battle finally ended last week when the company agreed to triple the severance it had offered. Union leader Mickaël Wamen didn’t hide his triumph. “It was a grand and beautiful struggle,” he wrote in a blog post on Jan. 24, announcing details of the settlement.
This type of labor militancy is the exception in Europe today; union power has taken a battering along with the economy in crisis-ridden nations such as Greece and Spain, which were once bastions of organized labor. But it’s not the only characteristic of the French labor scene that is exceptional. Although only 8 percent of French workers actually belong to a union — a tiny proportion by international standards – French unions wield enormous political clout over the national economy...........
.......... In an affront to unions — and a move critics in his Socialist Party are calling a shift to the right — Hollande is advocating a new “responsibility pact,” under which companies would see their high social security costs reduced in exchange for creating jobs. Labor unions dislike the initiative because they believe it will mean cuts to social spending, which they oppose, and they don’t trust employers to create jobs in return. Even the more moderate unions that are prepared to accept some sort of a deal are insisting on a formal list of obligations that employers must fulfill — and are calling for a new state body to ensure that these obligations are actually met.
So far it’s just an announced intention, and the details need to be worked out. ...........

The totally corrupt and the grossly inefficient Liberal govt. of Ontario ...
Scandal upon scandal plague the Ontario Liberals and yet shamelessly they continue on to the next scandal without so much as by your leave.
Worst of all, the opposition, the PC party is full of dead people. But saying that would be like insulting zombies who would have done a much better job at hounding the Liberals out of Ontario. Sadly, the PC party is simply not up to doing the needful.
The Liberals hold on to their power in Ontario only because of the Labor Unions whom they have pampered every which way and these organizations prop them up. The non-Canadian companies are opting to close shop and move out because they can't afford the demands from the Labor Unions and the govt. of Ontario will not help those companies to get the blackmailers off their backs. Ultimately, its the citizens of Ontario who are the losers but being the full-blown masochists that Liberal voters usually are, they welcome the constant flaying they get and beg for more.
Adrian Morrow writing at Globe&Mail:
Wynne responds to Auditor-General's tough report on Ontario Power.
Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne is pledging to rein in Ontario Power Generation after an audit revealed that the agency was hiring more executives and paying them big bonuses when it was supposed to be downsizing.
The government will table legislation early next year to give it direct control over salaries, benefits and other perks at OPG, she said.
“I’m deeply concerned about what seems to be the culture in that organization,” she told reporters Wednesday at Queen’s Park. “We have a need for the government to have more control over compensation packages and we will be introducing legislation in order to put those controls in place.”
The province has already fired three top OPG executives – the chief financial officer and two vice-presidents – in the wake of the damning audit.
Auditor-General Bonnie Lysyk revealed Tuesday that OPG’s executive suite had ballooned in recent years and that the majority of those new bosses received top bonuses. Meanwhile, OPG was shedding jobs in the lower ranks and denying top bonuses to regular employees.
Ms. Lysyk also took aim at the Crown corporation’s generous pension plan – the vast majority of which is funded by taxpayers – and the fact that OPG appeared to be hiring its employees’ family members without any evidence that it had followed correct procedures.......

The unique madness of France
Muslims and Labor Unions will bring down the EU like nothing else will.
From YahooNews:
.... For the most part, these rules just provoke a Gallic shrug in France itself. But at a time when the national economy remains stuck in a rut and unemployment continues to rise, this latest ruling on Sephora has struck a raw nerve. The case was brought by a consortium of labor unions, which has been zealous in its attempts to have the store-closing hour law enforced, arguing that it needs to protect workers from unscrupulous owners who force them to work antisocial hours. But that logic is patently untrue in this case.
The cosmetics chain reckons it does about 20 percent of its business after 9 p.m., and the 50 sales staff who work the late shift do so voluntarily — and are paid an hourly rate that is 25 percent higher than the day shift. Many of them are students or part-time workers, and they have publicly expressed their indignation about being put out of work by labor unions. The judge refused to take into consideration a petition they presented to the court, saying the case was a matter of public order, so now they are taking their campaign online, including with a Facebook page. Sephora says it will appeal the decision.
Political reaction has been swift. Pierre Lellouche, a member of parliament for Paris whose constituency includes the Champs Elysées, called the regulations "suicidal," and said it was "scandalous in our country, where the unemployment rate is above 10 percent of the active population, that unions should fight against jobs, and even more worrying that the law should be on their side." The national employers association has called for the laws to be changed. And an association of store owners on the Champs Elysées has worried publicly about wealthy tourists going elsewhere to shop, including London, where there are far fewer barriers to their ability to spend money......

Our brave new world where children are taught to learn nothing
Our dumbed-down Planet of the Left.
Harry Mount writing at TheTelegraphUK:
It was bad enough last week when 100 deluded academics wrote to the Telegraph,
attacking the idea of teaching children lists of facts, rules and spellings.
Now, even more scarily, the teachers responsible for those children are attacking the idea of knowing stuff. The National Union of Teachers has laid into a supposed "pub quiz" approach to teaching – by that, they mean teaching children to learn things.
Anne Swift, from the NUT's ruling executive, said she feared a curriculum that will mean “teaching children to learn facts by rote, with inspectors turning up to test the children’s knowledge of the continents, chronological order in history and the times tables".
Oh God, imagine the horror of it – children knowing what the world looks like and what order the most important events in history took place, and discovering how to add up. How wicked…
Another teacher produced the tired old line that the internet has replaced the need to know things: “We live in a digital era. Children do not need to be carriers of information any more. Everything is available on the internet at the click of a button."
Is it really a teacher – and, presumably, a university graduate – who can come up with such rubbish? What would you have thought of Archimedes, Shakespeare or Darwin, if they'd said, "Erm, I actually don't know anything – but I've got a huge library full of lots of books and stuff – I can look it all up in an instant." You wouldn't have called them resourceful – just stupid. Ditto, anyone now who knows nothing, but does have a decent wifi connection.
In the most horrifying, patronising statement, one teacher said that, thanks to the need to learn facts in the new curriculum, "creativity and enjoyment at school will be reduced, thus alienating young people and leading to more school absence".
Can you imagine a teacher at a good private school being allowed to say, we won't teach the children anything because then they'll play truant? No – and that's why private schools will go on outperforming state schools, as long as this wicked, mad, contrary kind of thought is allowed to flourish in the NUT.

Comparison: Qatar vs Detriot
Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain and the rest of the Sunni nations have got to where they are today as a result of the West sending them shiploads of money in exchange for their oil. Did the West think that after the oil supplies dry out the Arabs would be reduced to the state they used to be in before they became billionaires? What does it say about countries that would rather buy oil from the dictatorial Arab countries while turning their own cities into wastelands because they refuse to drill for oil on their own land?
The vid of Detriot is from over a year ago. Imagine how much worse it must have gotten today. The decline of Detroit is a perfect example of how Labor Unions can destroy everything they touch when they have the government they have brought to power in their back pocket.
The first pic is what the Qataris are building for the 2022 world cup. Go here to see more of the stadium plans.

More Union Problems
HAHAHAHAAH
BBC NEWS:
Muslim suicide bombers in Britain are set to begin a three-day strike on Monday in a dispute over the number of virgins they are entitled to in the afterlife. Emergency talks with Al Qaeda have so far failed to produce an agreement.
The unrest began last Tuesday when Al Qaeda announced that the number of virgins a suicide bomber would receive after his death would be cut by 25% this February from 72 to 54. A spokesman said increases in recent years in the number of suicide bombings has resulted in a shortage of virgins in the afterlife.
The suicide bombers' union, the British Organization of Occupational Martyrs (or B.O.O.M.) responded with a statement saying the move was to its members and called for a strike vote. General Secretary Abdullah Amir told the press, "Our members are literally working themselves to death in the cause of Jihad. We don't ask for much in return but to be treated like this is like a kick in the teeth".
Speaking from his shed in Toilet in the West Midlands, Al Qaeda chief executive Hassheetin Mapants explained, "I sympathize with our workers concerns but Al Qaeda is simply not in a position to meet their demands. They are simply not accepting the realities of modern-day Jihad in a competitive marketplace. Thanks to Western depravity, there is now a chronic shortage of virgins in the afterlife. It's a straight choice
between reducing expenditures or laying people off. I don't like cutting benefits but I'd hate to have to tell 3,000 of my staff that they won't be able to blow themselves up.
Spokespersons for the union in the North East of England, Ireland , Wales and the entire Australian continent stated that the change would not hurt their membership as there are so few virgins in their areas anyway.
According to some industry sources, the recent drop in the number of suicide bombings has been attributed to the emergence of Scottish singing star, Susan Boyle. Many Muslim jihadists now know what a virgin looks like and have reconsidered their benefit packages.

Hostess no more
18,500 workers will now have to depend on the goodies Obama dishes out to the unemployed. This particular company is closing its doors because they are fed up with the Unions....as will many others. I hope someone somewhere has started keeping a tally of the companies going under. The bloodbath has just started, folks. Thanks to the Democrats and their voters and above all thanks to the Labor Unions.
Hostess Brands -- the maker of such iconic baked goods as Twinkies, Devil Dogs and Wonder Bread -- announced Friday that it is asking a federal bankruptcy court for permission to close its operations, blaming a strike by bakers protesting a new contract imposed on them.
The closing will result in Hostess' nearly 18,500 workers losing their jobs as the company shuts 33 bakeries and 565 distribution centers nationwide, as well as 570 outlet stores. The Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union represents around 5,000.
"We deeply regret the necessity of today's decision, but we do not have the financial resources to weather an extended nationwide strike," said CEO Gregory Rayburn in a statement.
Hostess will move to sell its assets to the highest bidder. That could mean new life for some of its most popular products, which could be scooped up at auction and attached to products from other companies......

The certified madness of the USA: "Only union members can save lives. Others can bugger off."
Unbelievable. Everything happening under the Obama regime is shocking, unbelievable and totally disgusting.
Matt Egan writing at FoxNews:
Despite devastation and millions of power outages in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, a utility crew from Alabama said it has been unable to help a ravaged New Jersey shore town due to a union dispute.
Officials from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers presented Alabama-based Decatur Utilities with documents that “required our folks to affiliate with the union,” Ray Hardin, general manager of Decatur, told FOX Business on Friday. “That was something that we could not agree to. It was our understanding and still is that it was a requirement for us to work in that area.”
Hardin said most of his six-man, four-vehicle crew was stuck in Virginia on Thursday instead of helping the N.J. shore town of Seaside Heights recover due to the bureaucratic tie-up. Eventually his crew ended up heading back home to Alabama because of the disagreement.
“We chose we could not agree to those documents and began looking for other areas that could use our assistance without those conditions,” Hardin said.
A spokesman from the IBEW said the union is "checking out the source of the story and trying to ascertain the facts."
In a subsequent statement, Decatur said its crews were held in place in Virginia pending clarification of documents received from the IBEW that "implied a requirement of our employees to agree to union affiliation while working in the" New York and N.J. areas.......

$28 an hr pouring coffee at Tim Hortons OR how public sectors pour money down the drain
Close your gaping mouth. I know it opened involuntarily like mine did when I read that coffee pourers could make that much.
.... Money-losing Tim Hortons in Newfoundland hospital paid staff $28 an hour. ...Located in St. John’s Health Sciences Centre, the Tim Hortons outlet lost $260,000. It’s the fourth fiscal year in a row that the franchise has seen red, according to hospital documents. From 2008 to 2009, it bled nearly $300,000....
----Spokesperson Zelda Burt said the hospital coffee shop was paying its staff higher wages than other Tim Hortons employees would typically receive.
“They charge you $1.94 for a large coffee, but the situation was that staff who were pouring that coffee were Eastern Health staff. They were actually getting paid $28 an hour.”.........

Yes, the mask has come off and what's exposed is coyote ugly
Dr Thomas Sowell writing at Townhall:
Labor unions, like the United Nations, are all too often judged by what they are envisioned as being -- not by what they actually are or what they actually do.
Many people, who do not look beyond the vision or the rhetoric to the reality, still think of labor unions as protectors of working people from their employers. And union bosses still employ that kind of rhetoric. However, someone once said, "When I speak I put on a mask, but when I act I must take it off."
That mask has been coming off, more and more, especially during the Obama administration, and what is revealed underneath is very ugly, very cynical and very dangerous.
First there was the grossly misnamed "Employee Free Choice Act" that the administration tried to push through Congress. What it would have destroyed was precisely what it claimed to be promoting -- a free choice by workers as to whether or not they wanted to join a labor union.........

Andrew Klavan on Hollywood's favorite game, the distortion of truth ....
and in the vid at the bottom of this post his take on public unions is absolutely RIGHT !!! I wonder why most people don't see unions for the evil they create and nuture all under the guise of "decent salaries for the hard-working."
Sullivan's Law says, in effect, that any organization that is not expressly right wing will become left wing over time. So it is with cultures too, I believe. And how could it be otherwise? All leftism is, really, is a form of decay, and all things made by man decay as time goes by. But if you ever wanted a glimpse of the mechanism by which that decay operates in our particular culture, the critical reception of Clint Eastwood’s latest film J. Edgar provides an invaluable insight.
A Hollywood icon, Eastwood has earned the right to make a bad film now and then and with J. Edgar he has exercised that right. The bio-pic of founder and long time head of the FBI J. Edgar Hoover is a mess. The narrative’s garbled timeline is purposeless and confusing; the characters’ motivations are unrealistic and programmatic; even the make-up is terrible.
But most noticeably, the script by gay activist Dustin Lance Black — author of the hagiography Milk — opts to serve the gay cause rather than the truth of its subject and thus produces perhaps the one version of Hoover’s life least likely to have happened. Here is one already notorious example. After his death, Hoover, a lifelong bachelor, was accused by a very unreliable source of attending gay orgies in drag. This is almost surely a slander, but there’s one thing we can say with certainty: either it’s true or it isn’t. Rather than taking a stand one way or the other, Black’s script has Hoover dressing in his dead mother’s gown only once as a token of grief — as if to say, “Well, we’ll only repeat the slanderous lie a little bit, and give it a compassionate setting, so as to be fair.” Add to that a wholly fantasized punch-me-kiss-me scene between Hoover and long time friend Clyde Tolson that could have come out of some 60′s vision of screaming queenery like The Boys in the Band or The Detective, and the movie’s version of the man’s life — not to mention human life in general — becomes absurd.....
