Armenia comes into view

Meanwhile, some Turkish media simplified events, accusing Armenian soldiers -- instead of Russian border guards -- of killing the shepherd, further deepening the already damaged trust between Turkish and Armenian publics.

For Gorgulu, the shooting of a Turkish shepherd by Russian soldiers protecting Armenia's land border reminds "the complexity of Turkey's relations with its forgotten neighbour Armenia."

Russia retained close political and military relations with Armenian since independence in 1992, making the former Soviet state one of Russia's closest partners in the South Caucuses. Russia has a military base in Gyurmi and in 1997 the two countries signed a friendship agreement that included a provision for Russian soldiers to patrol the borders with Turkey and Iran.

Russian border guards' spokesman Sergei Grechin told Itar Tass news agency that Russian border guards shot the shepherd after he had opened fire on them while running in the direction of the Armenian territory.........
