All together now shout out "Macleans is a top-notch magazine"

However, let's just whisper amongst ourselves that the Conservative govt is no more ... they have turned more liberal than the Libs.  A few years ago if I had said to you that PM Harper and his govt would soon criticize Macleans but not the CBC who sucks us out of 1 Billion+ annually, you would have told me to go suck on a lemon.  Right?  Hmmmmmm.  Happy with the Conservative govt now?  Is anybody keeping count of all the wrong moves this minority govt has been making of late?  Sandy of Crux of the Matter where are you???   Start a new list dear girl.... and make it the exact opposite of what you used to have.  This new one will be extra long and much longer than the "Accomplishments of the Harper govt" that you were so proud to keep track of.   Don't forget to add the Pastor Jones "do not burn korans" shout out from the PM and the "Macleans should be ashamed of themselves" from the entire gang.

.....Political columnist Vincent Marissal said: “I don’t see anything that’s inaccurate or exaggerated. Every Quebec media outlet has drawn similar conclusions in recent months.” When CBC TV went looking for public reaction to the Maclean’s cover in Montreal, it mostly found people who admitted that what we said is correct. “It’s sad. But it could be true,” noted one glum-looking man on the street, about his province’s standing.

Quebec does have a problem. Quebec’s political system is failing its people. But let’s be clear about this: it is a political problem, and a reflection on the province’s politicians and its political culture, not a condemnation of the character of the province or its people. Premier Charest’s letter to this magazine claims that we said “Quebecers are genetically incapable of acting with integrity.” Like all of the “Quebec-bashing” allegations, that is not only false but cheap in that it implicates the citizenry in the misdeeds of the politicians and their cronies. It is bad enough that the people of Quebec have to put up with corruption in public office—they shouldn’t be smeared by it as well.

Quebec voters have proven time and again they have little patience for corrupt politicians—frequently tossing out governments tainted by scandal. That is cause for optimism for the future of the province’s political culture. Another ray of hope is the robust state of investigative journalism in the province. Much of the iniquity we described in our article was diligently probed and exposed in newspaper and broadcast reports............

  1. More and more I find myself supporting PM Harper primarily because it's him against the MSM and I tend to support the underdog and secondly because he's not Liberal.

Just once I'd like to see him go against the stream.

  2. Oh really? The Conservative govt has not moved to the left and almost sleeping in the Lib camps? That's news to me and to a whole huge lot of us.

  3. Good Lord...you have fallen into the media's trap and are now believing that Stephen Harper is evil - I thought Conservatives were smarter than that?

You do know that this little motion has acheived exactly what the coaltion wants, right?? Too bad.

  4. I hate this as much as anyone else, Maria. the problem is, the Liberals and NDP eagerly jumped on this opportunity to show Quebec just how much they love them. Can you picture Stephen Harper then standing up and saying, "No...that's a bad idea"?

He would be crucified as having "humiliated" Quebec (remember what happened when he tried to cut a few non-essential arts programs?). The news media would keep the story going for days, and all three opposition parties would have a field day. If only we could have trusted the Liberals and NDP *not* to exploit this for political gain.

Sorry, but there was just no choice in the matter (like the so-called 'stimulus' spending). This is a perfect example of why minority government isn't good government...

I await your response with bated breath.

  6. This is more of what we have been seeing from the CPC in the past year. On the one hand so afraid of offending potential voters in Quebec or other places where their support is weak that they are hardly recognizable as a conservative party.

On the other hand coming up with somewhat bizarre, mostly irrelevant, conservative policies that do real damage (cough - census- cough).

Yes, Harper and his current gov is better than the Liberals, by far, but it's getting harder and harder to become enthusiastic about where we are heading.

  7. Sorry Maria....when you have a minority government, especially a minority government that the press daily twist the context of any story to make you look bad, you need to tread lightly.

Unfortunately, this country IS a diverse country. Your little corner of the world isn't the only part of the world that the government has to appease.

BTW - next time you want a comment on something you have written, please don't make the reader go back through link after link to find out what you are even talking about.

I am getting really tired of pointing out that trying to lead a minority government in a country that has three socialist parties and the media on the other side not to mention when that country is so large and so diverse in thinking, is like herding cats.

If you can't see that having accomplished everything that has been done in that type of a situation is somehow miraculous, well, you need to pull your head out of the sand and realize that it isn't all about you!

    You can breath now.

Pay attention to this Maria! This is just another "set up" by the Coaliton to cause disruption in the "base".

Too bad that you fell for it!

  9. Alberta Girl - I will read G&M article later, but as you say if Macleans set up the Tory govt, then the Tory govt was stupid enough to fall for it.

As for giving links into links, all you had to do was access my post titled "Calling Peter MacKay....." and then read through one or two links to gauge what it was all about. Not very difficult to do.
I am still awaiting your feedback after you read those links in that post.
The minority govt of PM Harper have been behaving a lot like liberals and if behaving and acting and passing mandates which make them look like liberal to many, then guess what, they are losing their integrity as Conservatives and falling in with the pack in order not to lose the uncertain grip they have on the reins. If one cannot ride the horse and whip it too when required, one will fall off and hopefully not break one's neck.

Shilling for the Harper govt even when criticism is clearly required to make them see that they should have more of a backbone, is doing more harm then good. You can shill for them all you like, others like me are here to point out the faults.... and as there are many, I will be kept extremely busy.

    Cheers.

Sorry, Maria. Perhaps I should have cut my reply down to just two words:

    POLITICAL SUICIDE.

As much as I respect your right to hold and express your own opinions, you're wrong here. They can show their backbone when they have a majority government.

You mean to say "NO real damage", right? Because that has been the result so far, despite the best efforts of the news media and opposition parties. The public simply doesn't care about the long-form census issue except that it has taken government attention away from other, more relevant matters like the economy and unemployment. The poll numbers back me up, sorry...
