.....The real job, the hard job, for all of us male bystanders, isn’t to rescue women, but to rescue other men from their own worst behavior and so prevent abuse in the first place, be it by a heroic and possibly dangerous personal intervention or the more difficult political mission of, say, passing an Equal Rights Amendment. One of the crises of contemporary manhood and contemporary bystanderdom, perhaps the very reason for our passivity, our cowardice, is the realization that most of the time we can’t even protect ourselves from the men who intimidate us, who take pleasure in treating us like "girls."

No wonder we, too, derive some pleasure from the precipitous falls of Harvey Weinstein, Leon Wieseltier, Roger Ailes, Bill O’Reilly, Mark Halperin, and the other celebs, politicians, and male eminences going down at the present moment. We sense with satisfaction that they’re finally paying for whatever they did or tried to do to women (or young men) sexually, for reducing them to powerless objects, just as they’ve always done, even if far less directly, to men like us, like me.

Women are finally rising up, spreading the net, pulling it tight. Maybe, at last, it’s our turn as well. So applaud #metoo, then raise #ustoo, where men can begin to be as courageous as the women who brought down the pigs. We have a lot of catching up to do.

We need to keep expanding the “Harvey effect” into all the corrupt and abusive pockets of politics, entertainment, and business, as perilous as that can sometimes be.  It’s time, too, to begin bucking the trend of rewarding aggressive men.

And count on it, there will be a bro-lash. There are too many underdogs in the pack who think their fates are entwined with those of the alpha dogs, including those generals like White House Chief of Staff John Kelly in Washington, too many producers and actors in Hollywood, too many hedge-fund vice presidents in New York, too many engineers in Silicon Valley. But there are also millions of us dudes ready to become ex-bystanders, including old guys like me, who need to redeem ourselves from our histories with the Crazy Ronnies, Docs, and Shads, and young guys who need to be woken to the thrilling power of standing up to such bullies.......

Female veterans battling PTSD from sexual trauma fight for redress.

Thousands of female veterans are struggling to get health-care treatment and compensation from the Department of Veterans Affairs on the grounds they suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder caused by sexual trauma in the military. The veterans and their advocates call it "the second battle" — with a bureaucracy they say is stuck in the past.

Judy Atwood-Bell was just a 19-year-old Army private when she says she was locked inside a barracks room at Fort Devens in Massachusetts, forced to the cold floor and raped by a fellow solider.

For more than two decades, Atwood-Bell fought for an apology and financial compensation from VA for PTSD, with panic attacks, insomnia and severe depression that she recalls started soon after that winter day in 1981. She filled out stacks of forms in triplicate and then filled them out again, pressing over and over for recognition of the harm that was done.

VA labels it "military sexual trauma" (MST), covering any unwanted contact, including sexual innuendo, groping and rape.

A recent VA survey found that 1 in 4 women said they experienced sexual harassment or assault. And the problem is growing more pressing because female veterans represent the military's fastest-growing population, with an estimated 2.2 million, or 10 percent, of the country's veterans. More than 280,000 female veterans have returned home from deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan.

About two weeks ago, when Atwood-Bell checked the VA website, as she does every day, she was stunned to discover that the agency had accepted her claim for compensation.

"It's taken over 20 years, and that should've never happened," said Atwood-Bell, who retired as a sergeant first class and lives in New Hampshire, her voice cracking with emotion. "My fight is not over. It's not done for so many other women out there. I want to help them to get what we are entitled to.".....

Over the past five years, only one other female Viking had made it to the individual finals at nationals, and this was a turning point, that quiet moment when Strzempko’s potential went from competitor to contender. The curly-haired middle-distance freestyler was the baby of the swim team, and in a sport where young promise follows a quick route to glory, she now had her start.

The coach was good at spotting talent, and on an August day in 2008, Strzempko says, he called her into his office and told her she had the potential to compete in the 2012 Olympic Trials, four years away. Like any athlete who has performed under a no-bullshit authority figure, she was thrilled, because nothing the coach said was said lightly.

Toward the end of their discussion, the coach asked the eighth-grader where she was planning to go to high school. After she told him, he informed her that swimming came before education and that she needed to be prepared for this reality. Strzempko said education came first in her family, and this set him off. Strzempko recalls him saying “Not this again” and then slapping her face. Next, she says, he ordered her into a storage room adjoining his office.

There, according to an account she would give years later to her parents and police, her coach anally and vaginally raped her. Strzempko’s brain couldn’t piece together what was happening. She was unable to cry or scream. Her body bled from two orifices. When the coach was finished, she says, he left her lying faceup on the room’s cement floor.

Lightheaded and unsteady, Strzempko got to her feet and walked through the YMCA to the lobby, where her mother was waiting. Monica Strzempko, a self-described helicopter parent who was then 49, asked her subdued daughter why she wasn’t more excited about the news of her Olympic prospects. Strzempko said she was happy, just shocked.............

The reports are almost unbelievable – and certainly not for the squeamish. They describe a ring of vicious sex traffickers who preyed on adolescent girls and operated with impunity for years, as authorities deliberately ignored and even covered up the evidence.

Among the victims was Amy, a young girl who was groomed for sex by some exciting new friends she’d made in the big city. They showed her a good time and made her feel special. By the time she was 14, she had been raped and abused repeatedly by at least six adults in their late teens and early 20s. She went to the police, who ignored her. Her parents begged for help, in vain. Social workers and police treated her like a “stupid, naughty girl,” she told the Times of London.

Amy was just one of at least 1,400 girls who were groomed and raped over two decades in Rotherham, a grim postindustrial town in northern England. Most of the victims were working-class. They were typically 12 to 14 when they were lured into a life of drugs, alcohol and abuse. Nearly all the abusers were Muslim men of Pakistani origin.

Britain has had more than its share of sex scandals lately. But this one is by far the most disturbing. It has shaken the country to the core, and prompted searching questions about the role of “cultural sensitivity” in covering up the abuse. And it has raised wider issues about Muslim integration into British life.

“Men of Pakistani heritage treated white girls like toilet paper,” columnist Allison Pearson wrote in The Telegraph. But authorities tried to bury the problem because they were afraid of being labelled racist, or that it might cost them votes. The Iraqi Red Crescent Society revealed, on Monday, that the organization of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant had transferred Christian and Yahzidi women to an unknown place after they detained them and their families at Tal Afar airport to sell them as “slaves.”

The Assistant Secretary-General of the association, Mohammed Alkhozai said, in an interview for IraqiNews.com, that “elements of ISIL detained more than 100 families at the Tal Afar airport; killing all the men, while they kept the women and children.”
Alkhozai indicated that “the elements of ISIL herded Yahzidi and Christian women to an unknown place with the aim of selling them as slaves of an enemy.”
He described that “it is a crime against humanity and human rights,” noting that “The Red Crescent condemns this crime against civilians and it must be stopped.”
He declared that “we are a humanitarian organization. We condemn such crimes against humanity and we call for the international community to intervene. Also, we call for humanitarian organizations to intervene forcefully to stop these crimes.”

The members of the Security Council condemn in the strongest terms the systematic persecution of individuals from minority populations, including Christians, and those who refuse the extremist ideology of ISIL and associated armed groups.  The members of the Security Council call upon all of Iraq’s communities to unite to respond, with the support of the international community, to this violent and senseless threat to Iraq’s unity, identity and future. 

The members of the Security Council note that the large-scale offensive carried out by ISIL in Iraq and Syria has a trans-border nature and affirm that ISIL poses a threat not only to these countries but to regional peace, security, and stability.......

The organization considered the atrocities in the two regions to meet the legal definition of genocide or crimes against humanity. It called on the United Nations and the International Criminal Court to investigate.

The organization said “there is a national grassroots campaign to include acts of violence in Iraq as crimes of genocide.” In a report cited by Al Sumariya, it was disclosed that “on the 12th and 13th of June, armed groups stormed the village of Bashir which is located in the south of Kirkuk and four villages in Taza Khurmatu, armed with the latest weaponry as well as military vehicles seized after clashes with the Iraqi army.”

The organization added that “those groups began immediately committing serious human rights violations which can be described as crimes against humanity and genocide according to the provisions of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide of 1948,” noting that “women and children bore the largest share of such violations because they could not escape, however men managed to escape into Taza Khurmatu, fearing from the oppression terrorists.”

The organization said that “gunmen crucified men and women after killing them with electricity. Among those cases were a ten-year-old child according to reports from witnesses and local sources of the campaign,” pointing out that “one of the most heinous crimes was the breaking into a house and slaughtering the entire family, including about five babies who were beheaded.”

Nigerian mothers of schoolgirls taken by Boko Haram: "We can't take it any more"

Nigerian women are extremely sad about how the West does not give a shit about what's happening to them and especially to their young girls who are at the mercy of Boko Haram. 

They are right about how the West plasters the news all over on their TVs when even one kid goes missing but when hundreds are taken in Africa, nobody seems to care.  
Our brave new world.  Whether we want to admit it or not ... life in the West is precious but life in Africa and the rest of the poor countries of the world ... they can die like flies and nobody gives a damn.  Life in the Middle East is definitely more precious than the blacks in Africa.  Admit it and get it done it!  

Imagine if 200+ schoolgirls were kidnapped in the Middle East by one of the known or unknown terror groups there. Definitely there would be more hue and cry  than what we are seeing being reported about the Nigerian kids.

The provincial head of women's affairs, Khadija Yaqeen, told Reuters that the girl had told her parents four months ago she had been assaulted.

The father invited the mullah to his house on Monday for dinner, police said.
"I cut off his ears and nose," her father Abdul Qahar, dressed in a traditional shalwar kameez and a turban, said from the police chief's office in the northern Baghlan province.

"I don't know if a cat ate his ears, but his nose went down the drain," he told Reuters, speaking in the Dari language....

After reporting a rape in Dubai,  a 29-year-old student from Austria was arrested for the “crime” of engaging in extra marital sex and told by police that she would be charged and sent to prison for one year unless she married her rapist. She was also accused of drinking alcohol, another crime in Dubai, the capital of the United Arab Emirates

The woman, who is understood to be Muslim, had been at a party in a hotel where alcohol is oftentimes served to Westerners. She was attacked by a Yemini man who cornered her in an underground parking lot. After reporting the rape, her passport was taken away and she was jailed by Dubai authorities.

The Austrian Foreign Ministry sent a special crisis team to Dubai to negotiate her release, which came surprisingly quickly. The woman, who remains unnamed, was allowed to leave Dubai and arrived recently in Vienna after a two-month ordeal.

"We noticed that a favorable moment arose to get her out. (Foreign) Minister (Sebastian) Kurz personally authorized me to travel down there and, if possible, to bring her back to Vienna, and that is what we did," said Michael Linhart, secretary general of the Austrian Foreign Ministry, speaking to ORF radio.

Linhart also said that it remains to be seen if the UAE will drop the charges against her.

An online petition, initiated by the international advocacy organization Avaaz, demanding the woman's release garnered over a quarter of a million signatures in just a few days and is believed to have contributed to successfully pressuring authorities in the UAE to release the woman......
