Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff would be fined under a new NDP proposal for his record-setting absenteeism in Parliament, QMI Agency has learned.

Ignatieff and other truants would face a $1,000 fine if they missed 50% of recorded votes in a given year under the New Democrat plan, NDP Leader Jack Layton will announce Thursday.

"It's an insult to voters to consistently and deliberately avoid voting on the issues that matter to them," Layton says in a statement obtained by QMI.

"My proposal ensures that if you don't show up, you will pay a price.".........
