In Clark County, Nev., rancher Cliven Bundy has refused to comply with orders from Federal judges to remove his cattle from land the BLM claims is Federal land and habitat for an endangered tortoise — a tortoise the Federal government has routinely killed. It’s land the Bundy family has grazed cattle on since the 1800s — land Bundy believes belongs to the State of Nevada, not the Feds. It’s land Bundy claims he has ancestral grazing rights for, which, if so, cannot be undone simply by an order from a Federal judge.
“My forefathers have been up and down the Virgin Valley ever since 1877. All these rights I claim have been created through pre-emptive rights and beneficial use of the forage and water. I have been here longer. My rights are before the BLM even existed,” Bundy said.......
