chance of seizing control of the government, and only one person was
killed.
I am also being generous when I say the rioters "forced
their way" in; DC chose not to increase its police presence in
preparation for the protests despite knowing that they were planned, and
there's footage of what appears to be cops actively letting them
through a police barricade. There was some fighting between police and
protesters, but contrasted with the unceasing barrage of police
brutality footage which emerged from Black Lives Matter demonstrations a
few months prior it’s fair to say the police response today was
relatively gentle....

was a fascinating online panel discussion on Wednesday night on the
Julian Assange case that I recommend everyone watch. The video is at the
bottom of the page.
But from all the outstanding contributions, I
want to highlight a very important point made by Yanis Varoufakis that
has significance for understanding current events well beyond the
Assange case.
Varoufakis is an academic who was savaged by the
western political and media establishments when he served as Greece’s
finance minister. Back in 2015 a popular leftwing Greek government was
trying to oppose the imposition of severe loan conditions on Greece by
European and international financial institutions that risked tipping
the Greek economy into deeper bankruptcy and seemed chiefly intended to
upend its socialist programme. The government Varoufakis served was
effectively crushed into obedience through a campaign of economic
intimidation by these institutions.
Varoufakis describes here the
way that leftwing dissidents who challenge or disrupt western
establishment narratives – whether it be himself, Assange or Jeremy
Corbyn – end up not only being subjected to character assassination, as
was always the case, but nowadays find themselves being manipulated into
colluding in their own character assassination...................
................. Varoufakis also says, the left needs urgently to go on the offensive.
We
need to find ways to turn the tables on the war criminals who have been
gaslighting us in demanding that Assange, who exposed their crimes, is
the one who needs to be locked up.
We need to make clear that it
is those who are so ready to smear anti-racists as antisemites – as
Corbyn’s successor, Sir Keir Starmer, has done to swaths of Labour party
members – who are the real racists.
And we need to unmask as war
hawks those who accuse the anti-war left of serving as apologists for

found the two pieces of news below pretty ironic. In one, Biden calls
the pro-Trump protestors "terrorists"and in the other, Trump has
designated the Houthis of Yemen "terrorists". So... can we now say
there are terrorists running around in both the USA and in Yemen?
Should there be travel restrictions stamped on the pro-Trump Americans
who marched in DC just like there will be travel restrictions on Yemeni

is as if the battle lines of civil war have been drawn up between
masses of Americans who have been led to believe in either a false
“bottom up” approach to economics, as defined by the Austrian School
represented by Friedrich von Hayek, or in the “top-down” approach of
John Maynard Keynes. The former sacrifices the general welfare of the
whole nation for the sake of the parts (i.e. individual liberties),
while the latter sacrifices the individual liberties of each citizen for
the sake of the general welfare (or at least some oligarch’s definition
of what that should be).
In my last article, I introduced, in
broad strokes, a history of the American System of political economy as
advanced by Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, Henry Clay,
Henry Carey, Lincoln, and McKinley. We reviewed how it was derailed by
McKinley’s 1901 murder and was only revived 30 years later with Franklin
Roosevelt’s 1932 presidential victory which put a stop to the 1933

week’s massive social media purges – starting with President Trump’s
permanent ban from Twitter and other outlets – was shocking and
chilling, particularly to those of us who value free expression and the
free exchange of ideas. The justifications given for the silencing of
wide swaths of public opinion made no sense and the process was anything
but transparent. Nowhere in President Trump’s two “offending” Tweets,
for example, was a call for violence expressed explicitly or implicitly.
It was a classic example of sentence first, verdict later.
Many
Americans viewed this assault on social media accounts as a liberal or
Democrat attack on conservatives and Republicans, but they are missing
the point. The narrowing of allowable opinion in the virtual public
square is no conspiracy against conservatives. As progressives like
Glenn Greenwald have pointed out, this is a wider assault on any opinion
that veers from the acceptable parameters of the mainstream elite,
which is made up of both Democrats and Republicans............

2020 election. While I opposed the challenge and the call for the
ten-day commission, I do believe that a real commission is warranted.
Indeed, the violence Wednesday only further shows the deep divisions in
this country over these lingering questions. However, there must be the
commitment to a real commission — not another placebo commission

I
hate federal commissions. I have always hated federal commissions.
Federal commissions are Washington’s way of managing scandals. They work
like placebos for political fevers, convincing voters that answers and
change are on the way. That is why it is so difficult for me to utter
these words: We need a federal election commission. Not the one proposed
by some Senate Republicans. And not like past placebo commissions. An
honest-to-God, no-holds-barred federal commission to look into the 2020 presidential election............
