New Zealand's earthquakes

From BBC
New Zealand quake: The geological impact of a 'complex' tremor
The powerful earthquakes which hit New Zealand were some of the most complex ever recorded, say scientists.

Earthquakes are caused by a sudden slip on a fault, the fractures in Earth's crust. There are three types of faults: strike-slip, normal and reverse faults. These faults indicate different movements of rocks.

Tonkin and Taylor, an engineering firm surveying the damage, said a section of the seabed along a 110km stretch of coast north of Kaikoura was lifted by between 2-2.5m. Prof Nicol said this was likely due to "reverse faulting".

The seabed rise stranded huge amounts of marine life, including crayfish and paua - an edible sea snail harvested for its meat and shells. Experts say it could take years for the wildlife to recover, a serious concern for the fishing industry.

Nepal earthquake

The deaths are overwhelmingly in Nepal, but the earthquake also claimed several lives in the  bordering countries of India and presumably in China too.

From NationalGeographic
Did Nepal Earthquake Change Mount Everest’s Height?
Scientists race against the clock to retrieve data that will also help them understand the devastating quake.

The massive earthquake that struck Nepal Saturday likely caused permanent changes in the Earth’s surface and may have made Everest a little taller—or shorter, scientists say.

A team of geologists from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is working on the problem now, but they need to retrieve data from a GPS station near Everest within the next 11 days, warns Kenneth Hudnut, a geophysicist who studies earthquakes with the USGS in Pasadena, California.

After that, new data will start recording over information about the quake, erasing the most detailed information on how much the station swayed back and forth and up and down. As a result, the geologists are scrambling to raise the funds to book helicopter time or to piggyback the mission on scheduled humanitarian efforts.............

Earthquakes, volcanoes, plagues, floods, WARS ....

what a bonanza for "end days" prophesizers!

From JournalGazette:
Two earthquakes measuring over 5 in magnitude  – the biggest yet – shook Iceland’s Bardarbunga volcano Sunday after the country issued an aviation red alert warning that an ash-emitting eruption may be imminent.

Iceland’s Meteorological Office recorded earthquakes of 5.3 and 5.1 in the early hours. It said there were no signs of an eruption.
The volcano, underneath Iceland’s vast Vatnajokull glacier, has been rattled by thousands of small earthquakes during the last week.
On Saturday scientists reported a small eruption under the ice, but it was not visible on the surface, and the Meteorological Office later said it appeared to have stopped.
Authorities have declared a no-fly zone of 100 nautical miles by 140 nautical miles around the epicenter as a precaution.

From YahooNews:
180 dead as floods wash away homes   in Nepal, India
The death toll from three days of flooding and torrential rain in Nepal and India rose to more than 180 people Monday, as relief teams sent food, tents and medicine to prevent any outbreaks of disease.

The worst-hit areas were in western Nepal and northern India, where swirling floodwaters submerged hundreds of villages and swept away homes made of mud and straw....
The last few days have seen several earthquakes of 5+ magnitude, notably in Iraq, Iran and Iceland and several of 4+ magnitude in Indonesia (just noticed the coincidence of the names of  all these four countries beginning with "I" ) and now we have two recent earthquakes of 6+ magnitude.  One yesterday in Chile and the other this morning in northern California.  (Again, another coincidence. Both beginning with "C")  LOL!  If something major happens in Ukraine, then are we in ICU (Intensive Care Unit) LOL!  Notice I said Ukraine and not UK or USA.

6.5 magnitude earthquake hits densely populated area in southwest China

There are reports of at least 400 dead and several hundred injured.

From Xinhuanet:
A 6.5-magnitude   earthquake jolted Ludian County of Zhaotong City in southwest China's Yunnan Province at 4:30 p.m. Sunday (Beijing Time), said the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).

The epicenter was monitored at 27.1 degrees north latitude and 103.3 degrees east longitude with a depth of 12 kilometers, according to the CENC.

"I felt a strong jolt on my fifth-floor home and some small objects in my home fell off the shelves," said a resident in the county seat of Ludian.
Most people rushed out of buildings to the streets. Electricity was cut, telecommunications services were affected and it was hard to reach people in Ludian by mobile phone, the resident said.

Another resident said it felt like "sailing a boat" when he was driving a car in the tremor.
The quake toppled and cracked many buildings, particularly old ones and residential homes.
Police and paramilitary officers are assembling and rushing to the quake-hit areas..........

Some of us are not taking the Japanese govt's word for the truth of what's happening at the Fukushima plant

Watch the documentary on the Chernobyl disaster.  Believe you me .... I am not the only one having a very bad feeling about the Fukushima disaster and wondering what else the Japanese are not telling their own citizens and the rest of the world.  Today was the third anniversary of that fateful day of the tsunami that claimed so many lives. Never trust the government.  If you watch the vid below you will understand how those ruling over us can be either totally brutal either intentionally or ignorantly.

)

Eliza Strickland writing at Foreign Policy:
.....Is the Japanese government finally giving up    on resettling Fukushima’s radioactive ghost town?  Before former residents can enter the radioactive ghost town of Okuma, just a few miles from the ruins of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, they must first get a permit from Japanese bureaucrats, who then advise them on protective measures. They'll need to suit up before they go in: Disposable paper coveralls, booties, gloves, caps, and facemasks will keep them safe enough for an hour's visit. The officials suggest they bring a dosimeter so they'll know exactly what radiation dose they're receiving as they walk through the desolate streets to their empty houses, and can avoid lingering in the most dangerous places.
Yet until recently, the Japanese government has maintained the politically expedient fiction that this town would soon be fit for habitation once more.

The residents of Okuma are among the roughly 100,000 nuclear refugees who are still barred from their homes. March 11 marks the third anniversary of Japan's triple catastrophe: the earthquake, tsunami, and onset of the nuclear crisis at Fukushima Daiichi, which led to partial meltdowns in three reactors. The explosions that shattered the plant's reactor buildings released a plume of radioactive material that drifted over northeast Japan, causing more than 150,000 people to flee their homes. Fallout settled on rooftops and lawns and driveways, on rice paddies and orchards, on roads and forests. The evacuated towns are still laced with the radioactive isotope Cesium-137, which has a half-life of 30 years.
In the years since the accident, the Japanese government first set out to map the region's radioactive hotspots, and then began a massive decontamination effort. A total of 100 municipalities were marked for cleanup, with 11 of those designated areas of special concern. Gradually, towns that weren't too contaminated -- those on the periphery of the evacuation zone -- are being reopened for inhabitants. Right now, residents of the town of Tamura are anxiously awaiting the April 1 lifting of the evacuation order for their area, although many say they're still worried about health consequences of moving back.........

Indonesia's Mount Sinabung continues to erupt

From YahooNews:
....Indonesia's Mount Sinabung  has authorities on the island nation preparing for the 'worst case scenario' after the volcano erupted 77 times over the weekend, including one particularly violent eruption of ash, gas and lava that sent residents fleeing down the mountainside on Sunday morning.
Mount Sinabung — a 2,500 metre-tall volcano located near the northern end of Indonesia's island of Sumatra — has erupted several times over the past several months, after waking up from a three-year slumber in mid-September. The volcano's activity has been increasing since then, forcing the government to issue stronger alerts and expand the evacuation area several times. The latest eruptions over the past weekend, 77 of them between Saturday and Sunday, blasted ash up to around 4,500 metres into the sky, producing pyroclastic flows that reached up to five kilometres down the volcano's southeast slope.............

"Frost Quakes" in Ontario

I suppose these kind of quakes are now more likely every winter, as in my opinion, our Earth has stepped into a mini-Ice Age.

James Nye writing at DailyMail:
...Canada is so cold residents are experiencing loud booms caused by 'frost quakes'

While America collectively freaks out over their impending 'polar vortex', Canada is changing the game when it comes to cold weather phenomenon as reports of 'frost quakes' emerge from around Toronto and across Ontario.

Indeed, as temperatures drop overnight to around -4f around the city hundreds of people are being startled by hearing large booms - causing them to think their homes are being broken into or gunshots are being fired.
In fact, they are merely hearing the after-effects of the frost quakes - or cryoseism - which are more commonly found on a glacier in the polar regions..........

Scary stuff

The effects of the deadly Japanese tsunami of March 2011 have the potential of now blowing up into one long nightmare.

Laura Italiano and Kerry Murtha writing at NYPost:
.....Navy sailor Lindsay Cooper  knew something was wrong when billows of metallic-tasting snow began drifting over USS Ronald Reagan.
“I was standing on the flight deck, and we felt this warm gust of air, and, suddenly, it was snowing,” Cooper recalled of the day in March 2011 when she and scores of crewmates watched a sudden storm blow toward them from the tsunami-torn coast of Fukushima, Japan.

The tall 24-year-old with a winning smile didn’t know it then, but the snow was caused by the freezing Pacific air mixing with a plume of radioactive steam from the city’s shattered nuclear reactor.
Now, nearly three years after their deployment on a humanitarian mission to Japan’s ravaged coast, Cooper and scores of her fellow crew members on the aircraft carrier and a half-dozen other support ships are battling cancers, thyroid disease, uterine bleeding and other ailments.
“We joked about it: ‘Hey, it’s radioactive snow!’ ” Cooper recalled. “I took pictures and video.”
But now “my thyroid is so out of whack that I can lose 60 to 70 pounds in one month and then gain it back the next,” said Cooper, fighting tears. “My menstrual cycle lasts for six months at a time, and I cannot get pregnant. It’s ruined me.”
The fallout of those four days spent off the Fukushima coast has been tragic to many of the 5,000 sailors who were there.
At least 70 have been stricken with some form of radiation sickness, and of those, “at least half . . . are suffering from some form of cancer,” their lawyer, Paul Garner, told The Post Saturday.
“We’re seeing leukemia, testicular cancer and unremitting gynecological bleeding requiring transfusions and other intervention,” said Garner, who is representing 51 crew members suing the Tokyo Electric Power Co., which operates the Fukushima Daiichi energy plant..............

Lots of more scary stuff here  at InfoWars. Looks like the US govt. has placed a very big order for potassium iodide, the kind that would save some in the event of nuclear disasters.  What do they know that they think there's no need to tell us?

Fukushima ... dangerous operation underway

Let's hope the Japanese manage to make the move without a mishap.

Paula Hancocks writing at CNN:
....Fukushima's nuclear power mess: Five big questions.  The meltdowns of three reactors at Japan's Fukushima nuclear power plant may have happened more than two years ago, but the disaster remains a giant, unresolved mess.....

......Here are five of the biggest questions still out there:
1. How dangerous for your health is Fukushima?.......
2. What can you do with radioactive water?.......
3. Is it safe to remove spent fuel rods?........
4. How do you remove molten fuel in melted down reactors?........
5. How do you stop running out of skilled labor?...........

Brand new island pops up on Pakistan's coast after earthquake

Island is thought to be about 18 meters height and 30 meters length and about 76 meters width.  Gases still emitting from it.

From DailyMail:
....Crowds of bewildered people gathered  on Pakistan’s southern coast to witness the emergence of a new island created following a major earthquake in the region.
The 7.8 magnitude quake struck 145 miles southeast of Dalbandin in Pakistan's quake-prone province of Baluchistan, which borders Iran, on Tuesday.
The earthquake was so powerful that it caused the seabed to rise and create a small, mountain-like island about 600 meters off Pakistan's Gwadar coastline in the Arabian Sea.......

IOC's awarding of 2020 Olympics to Tokya, to put it mildly, is extreme foolhardiness of the first order

As if you needed any more proof that there is corruption and bias running  rife in the IOC... but if you do, take the case of  the committee awarding the 2020 Olympics to a country that is presently burdened with the Fukushima nuclear disaster which might likely  become the worst known nuclear calamity  if there's another major earthquake or tsunami in its vicinity.  Some rumors say that Japan has  already made secret plans to relocate the 40+ M inhabitants from  that island to Japan proper if  the need arises and  the Fukushima plant's deadly cargo cannot be contained.

And, in this messy situation the IOC decides to hold the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo!
Just like the idiotic officials  of the FIFA World Cup awarding the 2022 to Qatar which shouldn't have happened for a myriad of reasons!
Why do we always presume that people holding those mighty positions way up there above us ordinary people have anything worthwhile in their skulls?  99% of them don't and never will.
South Korea did the sensible thing by banning fish imports from Japan.

The vid is from about a month ago.

Charlie Smith writing at Straight:
.....IOC grants Tokyo 2020 Olympics, despite ongoing concerns   over Fukushima power plant.  International Olympic Committee delegates in Buenos Aires chose Japan's capital city over Istanbul in the final round.
Madrid was rejected in the first round of balloting.

The prime minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, travelled with the Japanese delegation and claimed that problems at the Fukushima nuclear plant were under control.

"It has never done and will never do any damage to Tokyo," he claimed, according to a CBC report.
Abe's comments contradict a recent post on the Fukushima Diary website, which tracks horror stories linked to the crippled nuclear facility.

Citing a news conference held by the Tokyo Electric Power Company, it stated that approximately half of the water from Fukushima plant's port travels into the Pacific Ocean.
Meanwhile, Damian Carrington's environmental blog, which is on the Guardian site, has described the CDN$325 million being spent on an ice wall as "the latest desperate attempt to halt the radiation-contaminated water that is leaking into the sea".
"The final cleanup will cost tens of billions and take 40 years," Carrington predicts.

Tokyo is 238 kilometres from Fukushima, which is slightly farther than the distance from Vancouver to Tacoma, Washington.
As for Abe's claim that his country's nuclear accident has had no impact on Tokyo, that assertion has been challenged Chris Busby. He has a PhD in chemical physics and is a former member of Britain's Committee Examining Risks of Internal Emitters.....

Harvey Wasserman writing at GlobalResearch:
.....We are now within two months   of what may be humankind’s most dangerous moment since the Cuban Missile Crisis.
There is no excuse for not acting. All the resources our species can muster must be focussed on the fuel pool at Fukushima Unit 4.
Fukushima’s owner, Tokyo Electric (Tepco), says that within as few as 60 days it may begin trying to remove more than 1300 spent fuel rods from a badly damaged pool perched 100 feet in the air. The pool rests on a badly damaged building that is tilting, sinking and could easily come down in the next earthquake, if not on its own.
Some 400 tons of fuel in that pool could spew out more than 15,000 times as much radiation as was released at Hiroshima.
The one thing certain about this crisis is that Tepco does not have the scientific, engineering or financial resources to handle it. Nor does the Japanese government. The situation demands a coordinated worldwide effort of the best scientists and engineers our species can muster.
Why is this so serious?...........

Andrew Davis writing at Bloomberg:
...South Korea Bans Japanese Fish Imports Over Fukushima Leak.  South Korea banned imports of fish caught near the site of the Fukushima nuclear accident over concerns of radioactive contamination from the plant.
The ban affects marine products from eight prefectures, including Fukushima, where the 2011 earthquake and tsunami devastated the plant, causing the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl. Some of the fishing grounds were already closed. The decision came after the Japanese government revealed last month that 300 tons of contaminated water leaked from the site, with some making it to the ocean......

Series of earthquakes hit northern coast of BC

I counted six earthquakes ranging from 4.6 to 5.9 on this chart,  and all in the last few hours.

From Globe&Mail:
A series of earthquakes struck an area   off British Columbia’s coast Tuesday, but they weren’t large enough to cause damage or tsunami warnings.

The largest quake measured 6 on the Richter scale and was centred almost 200 kilometres off Bella Bella, on B.C.’s northern coast.

Natural Resources Canada says two more afternoon quakes struck within 20 minutes of each other and measured 4.5 and 4.9 on the Richter scale.......................

Ah .... now I know why I've been so gloomy and lethargic today

Sun flares are to blame.  No, seriously ... it's true !    Earthquakes and sun flares are mainly to be blamed for our mood swings.

From SpaceWeather:
Humongous eruption:  A truly gigantic explosion happened on the sun yesterday. On Nov. 16th, magnetic fields snaking halfway across the sun's southern hemisphere erupted in tandem, producing a prominence so big, it doesn't fit inside this image from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO):

The two articles below are from several months ago.

David Shiga writing at TheNewScientist
The sun is gearing up    for a peak in activity at a time when technology makes our planet more vulnerable to solar outbursts than ever before. Monitoring has improved since the last solar maximum, so what are the big risks this time around?
About once every 11 years, the sun goes ballistic, throwing out more bursts of magnetic activity than normal. As a large but harmless solar flare signalled last week, the next solar maximum is due in 2013.......

Catherine Brabic writing at TheNewScientist
....Many animals can sense  the Earth's magnetic field, so why not people, asks Oleg Shumilov of the Institute of North Industrial Ecology Problems in Russia.
Shumilov looked at activity in the Earth's geomagnetic field from 1948 to 1997 and found that it grouped into three seasonal peaks every year: one from March to May, another in July and the last in October.
Surprisingly, he also found that the geomagnetism peaks matched up with peaks in the number of suicides in the northern Russian city of Kirovsk over the same period.
Shumilov acknowledges that a correlation like this does not necessarily mean there is a causal link, but he points out that there have been several other studies suggesting a link between human health and geomagnetism.
For example, a 2006 review of research on cardiovascular health and disturbances in the geomagnetic field in the journal Surveys in Geophysics (DOI: 10.1007/s10712-006-9010-7) concluded that a link was possible and that the effects seemed to be more pronounced at high latitudes.....

Strong earthquakes hit Iran

 6.3 earthquake   in Tabriz.

There were two quakes, both measuring  6+ and several aftershocks of  4+.  Reports coming in are scanty as communication links seem to be down  in the two areas hit.

Two strong earthquakes   struck northwest Iran on Saturday and at least 50 people were taken to hospital, but there were no reports of any deaths, Iranian media said.
The U.S. Geological Survey measured the first quake at 6.4 magnitude and said it struck 60 km (37 miles) northeast of the city of Tabriz at a depth of 9.9. km (6.2 miles) at 12.34 GMT.
It said a second earthquake measuring 6.3 struck 49 km (30 miles) northeast of Tabriz 11 minutes later at a similar depth. Three more lesser aftershocks have followed since then.
The second quake struck near the town of Varzgan, Fars news agency said. "The quake was so intense that people poured into the streets through fear," it said....

Somebody is experimenting with explosive pebbles

USA? Russia? China? Who?  Either that or these could be porous pebbles that have absorbed radiation from other experiments or something unknown to us as yet from the gas emitted  from quakes along that coastline. Very intriguing.

....A California mother is recovering from second- and third-degree burns after colored rocks her family collected from a southern California beach unexpectedly caught fire while in her shorts pocket.

"We were talking about who was going to pick up the babysitter," Lyn Hiner said today on "Good Morning America." "And all of a sudden something hot on my leg just sort of started to bother me so I started thinking it was a bug bite, so I started slapping it and the next thing I know my pants were on fire."

The harmless-looking, green- and orange-colored rocks, which Hiner's daughters found Saturday on San Onofre State Beach in southern California, are now the subject of an intense scientific investigation.

Hiner, 43, had put the rocks in her pocket after they left the beach. As she and her husband, Rob Hiner, were preparing to go out later that evening, the rocks suddenly erupted in her pants.

Rob Hiner, who appeared on "GMA" alongside his wife at the Santa Ana, Calif., burn center where she is being treated, said the couple had no idea what was happening.

"It was just this bright intense flame," he said. "We didn't know what it was. Our first response was just to try to pat it out.

"But, In trying to pat it out, it wasn't going out so the next thing was just to try and drop and roll and eventually we just tried to tear her shorts off and got them off of her," he said. ....
