Mary Watson of Vancouver takes Canadian banks and credit card companies to court

....In the court documents, Watson says  she is seeking to recover the fees that the credit card companies and banks "have collected illegally from merchants."
The card companies charge a fee of 1.5 to three per cent of the total amount of the transaction each time a credit card is used. That can mean $15 in fees paid by the merchant when a customer charges a $500 purchase. The fee paid by a merchant for a debit transaction, on the other hand, is about 12 cents.

This lawsuit echoes arguments made by the Competition Bureau of Canada late last year, when it moved to strike down the rules companies impose on merchants that accept their credit cards.
The bureau said it was concerned the rules prohibit merchants from encouraging lower-cost forms of payment, such as debit and cash.

Under the current agreement, merchants cannot offer lower prices for non-credit card transactions.
In his 91-page decision certifying the class action lawsuit, B.C. Supreme court Chief Justice Robert Bauman dismissed the banks' claim that Watson hadn't demonstrated a "genuine controversy."..........

......Over the past couple of weeks, there has been a growing chorus of voices calling for a boycott of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi because of the Russian government's stance on homosexuality.

The worldwide outcry is particularly in response to new laws that would allow Russian authorities to arrest tourists and foreign nationals they suspect of being homosexual, lesbian or pro-gay.

Some are not just calling for a boycott — there's about 66,000 people (as of 12:01 a.m. Thursday) who have signed a petition asking the International Olympics Committee to relocate the Games to Vancouver.............

......Vancouver City Councillor Geoff Meggs, however, suggests that the petition isn't practical.

"I can understand the intention, but practically I don’t see how it could happen," he told CP.

"I think lots of people in Vancouver would love to have the Games again, but it’s a question of who would pay for it and how it could possibly be done, and I don’t think we know the answer to either of those questions.".........

.....Vancouver police have arrested  a woman accused of trying to chain the door of an upscale Downtown Eastside restaurant and trap staff inside in an effort to protest the neighbourhood's increasing gentrification.

Robyn Pickell was taken into custody shortly after 3 p.m. Monday in the generally crime- and poverty-ridden neighbourhood.

Staff members were working inside the chic Pidgin restaurant on March 15 when they saw a woman attempting to chain and lock the front doors a little after midnight.

The 25-year-old appeared in court Tuesday before being released from custody on an undertaking. She's next due in front of a judge May 24.

Pidgin has been the site of frequent anti-gentrification protests since February.

Demonstrators have yelled at patrons entering and exiting the restaurant, and even went so far as to shine flashlights through the windows as diners ate.

Police also attended the scene when one protester was attacked with either bear or pepper spray.

The Brits are whining as usual

They can't even discipline their muslim citizens who come out in force to jeer, mock and threaten the home coming of soldiers from Afghanistan but they have the cheek to tell us that: "Alas, the Canadians have come across as a bunch of mean-spirited, chippy, unsporting losers."

My guess is that millions across the world never thought that Canada would be first in Gold and that we would be doing so fantastic overall. As I write this, we have won 12 Gold and our overall standing is 24. My estimate says an overall medal count of  28 at Olympics end.

However,  for the Brits to actually come out and show their gall is so unbecoming of a nation that used to be at the forefront once upon a time. How the mighty have fallen in stature and demeanour!!   What a total azzhole
