The most senseless story I have read in a long, long time

After you read the article below,  think a bit about it.  So far,  the authorities have dropped 4 loads of an average 2000 mice on the island of Guam, as part of an  $8 M scheme to rid the island of brown tree snakes..  There are supposedly 2 Million brown tree snakes that are targeted, and as far as I know, snakes don't share their meals with other snakes.  So .... 8000 "poisoned" mice will be consumed by 8000 snakes thus hopefully killing 8000 snakes.  The remaining 1,992,000 snakes will need almost 2 million mice and 10s of 1000s of drops from planes or helicopters and that would translate to only 8 M dollars? I don't buy it.  Wasn't anyone capable of coming up with a less expensive and a much better scheme?

From NBC News:
They floated down from the sky Sunday — 2,000 mice,    wafting on tiny cardboard parachutes over Andersen Air Force Base in the U.S. territory of Guam.
But the rodent commandos didn't know they were on a mission: to help eradicate the brown tree snake, an invasive species that has caused millions of dollars in wildlife and commercial losses since it arrived a few decades ago.
That's because they were dead. And pumped full of painkillers.
The unlikely invasion was the fourth and biggest rodent air assault so far, part of an $8 million U.S. program approved in February to eradicate the snakes and save the exotic native birds that are their snack food........
