Muslim Canadian Congress makes a very sensible call...

and Ottawa should take action asap to ban the burka and the niqab pronto.

Middle Eastern garments designed to cover a woman's face are "medieval" and "misogynist" symbols of extremism with no basis in Islam, a Canadian Muslim lobby group said Wednesday as it urged Ottawa to ban the burka and the niqab.

The Muslim Canadian Congress called on the federal government to prohibit the two garments in order to prevent women from covering their faces in public -- a practice the group said has no place in a society that supports gender equality.

"To cover your face is to conceal your identity," congress spokeswoman Farzana Hassan said in a telephone interview, describing the issue as a matter of public safety, since concealing one's identity is a common practice for criminals.

Ban the burqa and the niqab NOW

  1. Definitely sound legislation if this could go through. That is comes at the urging of the Muslim Canadian Congress is all-telling acknowledgement of an outdated and ridiculously oppressive custom, fashioned by cruel men who use religious extremism to substantiate their control of women. In the progessive Parliamentary democracy of Canada, this is totally unacceptable. Our immigrant population is significant, but they can leave their excess baggage at the door.

  2. I remember when I was living in Thunder Bay, I saw women wearing burqas as they were leaving a religious place of worship in the south end of town. The locals still call the south end, Fort William. When I think about it, the women were wearing something like burqas as they left a cougar bar. My only problem as I entered the cougar bar was wondering if I was predator or prey. Couga-a-a-a-a-r! At my age, I wasn't sure. Anyway, the coogs wore touques with huge scarves that covered their whole faces. It was minus 30 Celcius on January evening. Coug-a-a-a-a-r!
