Ukraine fiasco .... Has WW3 been avoided?

I haven't watched the full and proper translation of everything that Russia's Putin said at the press conference a few hours ago.  Basing from the below, this is the most complicated Orwellian newspeak I have encountered coming from any politician ... even if the version from the ultra conservative New Republic  is only halfway accurate.  What is Russia plotting?   Have we really avoided a major conflict that would have led to WW3?  Is Crimea now back with Ukraine? What's going on?

Didn't you read the reports? They were open source reports. So I don't know what happened there. It's unclear. But did you see the bullets piercing the shields of the Berkut [special police]. That was obvious. As for who gave the order to shoot, I don't know. Yanukovich didn't give that order. He told me. I only know what Yanukovich told me. And I told him, don't do it.
